De Volkskrant: 'New international architecture award recognises socially driven projects with substantial financial rewards.'

In its 20 November 2024 issue, Dutch national newspaper de Volkskrant featured the launch of the Ammodo Architecture Award, a new international award recognising socially and ecologically responsible architectural projects.

The article highlights how the award stands out by celebrating architecture that offers solutions to social and ecological challenges. Unlike many prizes that charge entry fees and provide only symbolic recognition, the Ammodo Foundation distinguishes itself by granting substantial financial awards to the creators of exemplary building projects. The prize money is intended to support the realisation of new work. By acknowledging both large- and small-scale initiatives in the categories of social architecture, social engagement, and local scale, the award aims to reinforce architecture’s role as a driver of socially and ecologically responsible practice.

The first two winners — a day-care and community centre for the elderly in Japan and a co-operative housing project in Barcelona — demonstrate how architecture can address pressing social issues such as ageing populations and affordable housing. Through this coverage, de Volkskrant emphasises architecture’s expanding role in tackling global social and environmental challenges.
